About Us

OIKOS has been providing quality social services since our founding in 1999. It is our mission to ”Build Strong Families”. We believe the best way to achieve this goal is to work with key community partners like schools and community agencies.

Vision

One Oikos Each Neighbourhood; One Oikos Each School

Mission

Bringing hope to individuals, unity to families, and harmony to society through life-transforming experiences.

What is "Oikos"?

"Oikos” is Greek for “family” or “household”. It is the basic building block of all societies, whether ancient or modern.

In OIKOS, "Oikos" is also a model of the ideal family, where there is respect, communication, clear roles, care, and concern. All these are underlined by LOVE, which we define as “being committed to the welfare of another”. It does not matter much who actually makes up the “oikos”.

“Oikos” is also the concept by which we conduct our business. OIKOS serves and builds up the community it resides in AS ITS MEMBER.

Facts

OIKOS began in 1999 as a church outreach ministry to the community in Sengkang Estate. With numerous volunteers from Sengkang Methodist Church, Oikos ran befriending programmes, family life education workshops, sexuality education, cyber-wellness and other youth development programmes in nearby schools.

In August 2004, Oikos was incorporated as a public Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG) and a Non-Profit Organization (NPO). It subsequently joined the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) as a full member, and was certified as a Volunteer Welfare Organization (VWO). Beginning with only a manager on staff and the volunteers we have, we embarked on an expansion programme to rapidly spread our outreach to other schools and community partners.

    Today, we...

    • employ 5 permanent staff and 4 contract staff
    • have a significant presence in 6 out of the 14 pri/sec schools in Sengkang estate alone
    • serve 3 other pri/sec schools just beyond Sengkang
    • serve 4 pre-schools and their families
    • regularly help over 15,000 children/youths and their families, EVERY YEAR
    • run 500+ hours of programmes, EVERY YEAR
